 As a developer of what have become  iconic properties, on the world renowned Las Vegas strip, such as the Mirage , the Bellagio and his namesake property the Wynn. Steve Wynn is the individual most responsible for the Las Vegas renaissance, that not only formed a new skyline for Las Vegas but,  also laid the foundation for Las Vegas to become the entertainment and epicurean capital of the world.

With the opening of the Encore, a sister property to the Wynn, the standard for Las Vegas gaming properties has been raised again. I had the the opportunity to visit the Encore on New Year’s Eve and was struck by the elegance of the design,  the vivid bold colors of the casino and as always, with a Wynn property, the  attention to detail. The property is a sensory delight.

This has been a challenging year for the gaming industry and Las Vegas in particular. Perhaps, no city on earth is as affected by the Global economic decline, as Las Vegas, which is dependant upon an endless stream of visitors to the city’s gaming and lodging facilities. The opening of the Encore  just a few days before Christmas is a tribute to the resilience of  Las Vegas as an idea, as well as the vision of Steve Wynn and his team.

Las Vegas is the world’s playground. It was built on aspiration and fantasy and the Encore is a brilliant symbol of both. As 2009 begins to unfold and we are again battered by a relentless media onslaught of economic  doom and gloom, it is heartening to know, that there may still be hope in the Age of Austerity.

The era of conspicuous consumption, is believed by some to have come to an end, however, as long as there there is a city like Las Vegas that houses a property as invigorating as the Encore the opportunity to lose yourself in consumptive luxury will continue.
